IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine relinquished a ninth-inning lead allowing three runs to Loyola Marymount Tuesday night at Anteater Ballpark to fall, 4-2.
Calvin Faucher was on to save it in the ninth, and after getting the first out, proceeded to walk a pair of Lions. Brandon Shearer provided the only hit in the ninth inning through the right side tying things up at 2-2. Faucher then uncorked a pair of wild pitches, part of three in the ninth, to give LMU (14-10) its third and fourth runs. UCI (11-10) did not have an answer as it would incur its first midweek loss of the season going down, 4-2.
The Anteater offense struggled again posting just three hits on the evening, two of which coming from Cole Kreuter with a double off the wall and later punching a single into right to score one of two unearned runs in the fourth.
Up until the ninth, UCI had a handle on the pitching as four pitchers combined to allow just one run on five hits and two walks led by starter Chris Vargas who one-hit the Lions through four innings.
Giuseppe Benedetti worked well in his start allowing one hit in three innings and giving up a pair of unearned runs. Steven Chavez had the only two-hit night for LMU, and provided an RBI along with Shearer.
The 'Eaters have slid into a five-game losing streak on the eve of Big West play. UCI welcomes Cal Poly in for a weekend series that begins Friday night at 6:30 p.m. ESPN3 will be broadcasting Friday night's game along with the 2:00 p.m. Saturday contest.
