'Eaters Swept by Cougars, 7-3

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was unable to crack Houston starter John King who dealt a complete game to top the Anteaters, 7-3, Sunday afternoon in Anteater Ballpark.

Houston (18-5) jumped out to another big lead scoring the game's first four runs over the second, third, and fourth innings knocked UCI (11-9) starter Cole Spear out after 1.1 innings.

UCI cut into the lead with RBI infield singles in the fourth from Cole Kreuter and Jake Hazard to make it 4-2. UH built the lead back to four in the sixth inning from a pair of singles, and even after a mammoth, opposite field home run from Keston Hiura, the Cougars answered that as well with a single run in the seventh and riding King's coattails to the end for the 7-3 victory.

King notched his third complete game of the season, however he did walk three batters which was more than his season total coming into the game. Anteater starter Cole Spear suffered his second loss after he was unable to get out of the second inning. Michael Martin was effective in four innings of relief, and Miles Glazier added 2.2 innings of shutout ball to keep the 'Eaters in it.

Hiura paced the offense reaching base in all four plate appearances which included his sixth home run of the season. He scored twice while Mikey Duarte added the third run.

For UCI, it's the fourth loss in a row which is the team's longest such streak since 2015, the same year UCI was last swept in a series. It's the first time a sweep has come at home since May of 2014, and the first time a non-conference school swept the Anteaters at home since 2003.

UCI looks to right the ship with five more games left in its homestand starting Tuesday night at Cicerone Field as the LMU Lions visit for a 6:30 p.m. start.
