IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine ran out of gas in its attempt for a sweep against No. 1 TCU this weekend stumbling, 16-7, in the Sunday finale in front of 1,394 fans in Anteater Ballpark.
TCU (12-3) changed things up scoring first in the contest off an RBI single in the first. UCI (9-5) responded with a pair of first inning runs of their own to take a brief 2-1 lead despite not recording a hit.
The lead stood until the third as the Frogs leaped over UCI for a 3-2 lead, and then the top-ranked bats woke up with six runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to open up a 14-2 advantage.
The 'Eaters continued to carve our runs with a four-spot in the seventh and despite just five hits on the afternoon, but TCU never wavered salvaging one game of the series putting a 16-7 stamp on the victory.
Starter Jared Janczak was effective for six innings allowing just two runs on two hits keep his season record clean improving to 4-0. Anteater starter Chris Vargas left in the third with the lead allowing just one run, but he and the bullpen struggled against the patient Frogs walking 10 batters altogether in addition to 17 hits.
Three Horned Frogs collected three-hit days while outfielders Josh Watson and Nolan Brown each drove home four RBI. TCU's 16 runs fell one shy of the record for runs allowed in Anteater Ballpark
UCI's hitting came from Adrian Damla who reached base in all five plate appearances including two hits and an RBI. Six Anteater batters were hit by a pitch including Alex Guenette twice. Adam Alcantara and Devin Pettengill each had two RBI getting all four home by way of walk or HBP. Keston Hiura, Cole Kreuter, and Adrian Damla each scored twice.
UCI still managed a series win over the nation's top team, and now aims back to the road for four games next week starting Tuesday in Los Angeles to take on UCLA.
