IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine rose to the occasion Sunday morning finishing out its series with an early-morning victory over Minnesota, 7-5, at Anteater Ballpark.
The Gophers (1-1) struck first with a pair of runs in the third off junior Louis Raymond making his Anteater debut, but the bats would come to his aid in the bottom half of the inning.
UCI (1-1) would chip away tying things at 2-2 on a Ryan Fitzpatrick infield single before Adam Alcantara slugged a two-run double off the left-center wall to snatch the lead. UCI would put up six total in the inning to lead 6-2 and give Raymond some cushion.
He dealt into the sixth before being relieved allowing just three runs and striking out three over 5.1 innings.
Minnesota got as close as 7-5 with the tying runs on base, but Calvin Faucher would turn away the threat in the eighth, and return for a shutout ninth to record the save and lock up the 7-5 victory.
Raymond's earned his first win as an 'Eater helped by two innings of solid bullpen work from Jordan Bocko.
Luke Pettersen had four hits for the Gophers and eight on the weekend. He along with leadoff hitter Alex Boxwell each drove home a pair of RBI. Gopher starter Toby Anderson could not get through the third inning allowing six earned runs in the loss.
The sides split two games over the weekend, and the 'Eaters will play a final home game on Tuesday, Feb. 21 against San Diego State before setting out on the road.
