IRVINE, Calif. - Five Anteaters will travel to Austin, Texas, for the 2017 NCAA West Preliminary Championships, May 25-27, as the NCAA announced the selections Thursday morning.
Senior Lloyd Sicard is set to make his fourth appearance at the West Prelims. He enters next week's competition ranked fourth in the 110m hurdles with a wind-aided personal-record 13.55, which he ran at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational (April 29). Sicard is coming off his third consecutive Big West title after finishing in a wind-legal season-best 13.61. He was just one-hundredth of a second off the meet record and his own school record. Sicard has advanced to the NCAA Championships in each of the last two years.
Senior Matt Seawright is a regional qualifier in both the hammer and discus for the second year in a row. His top marks in both events came at the Big West Championships as he claimed runner-up honors in the hammer with a career-best 210-11, and finished third in the discus with a season-best 180-07.
Sophomore Isaiah Jewett has been quite the surprise in his first year running the 800m. He is unbeaten in five meets, most recently winning the event at the Big West Championships on May 13. Jewett's lifetime-best 1:48.22, which he achieved at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational, ranks 14th among the West regional qualifiers.
Senior Brandon Howard is set to make his second postseason appearance, advancing to the West Prelims in the 400m hurdles. He notched a personal-record 51.61 at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational to qualify for the regional meet. Howard ranks fifth in program history.
Sicard, Howard and Jewett also teamed up with sophomore Paul Resong to earn a spot in next Saturday's 4x400 relay. They ran a season best and West regional qualifying time of 3:09.19 in their Big West victory on May 13. The quartet will be the Anteaters' first representatives in the 4x400 since 2012.
The University of Texas at Austin will serve as host to the NCAA West Preliminary Championships, May 25-27, with the three days of competition taking place at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The top-12 finishers in each event advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 7-10.
