UC Irvine, led by league MVP Jerry Green, won the
program’s first Big West Conference regular-season titles in
2001 and 2002. The Anteaters have competed in the National
Invitation Tournament four times (1982, 1986, 2001 and 2002) and
advanced to four NCAA Division II regionals (1968, 1969, 1972 and
1975).
Kevin Magee is regarded by many as the best player in the
program’s history, earning first team Associated Press
All-America honors in 1981 and 1982 when he averaged 26.3 points
and 12.3 rebounds. His No. 44 is the only uniform number
retired at UCI.
Scott Brooks, who played at UCI from 1985-87, was named NBA
Coach of the Year with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2010. He
played 11 seasons in the NBA, including 1994 with the NBA-champion
Houston Rockets.
The Bill Mulligan-led Anteaters topped the nation in scoring
(86.4) in 1980-81, and his teams defeated perennial national powers
UNLV six times and UCLA twice during the 1980s.
